While some litter, such as food, breaks down, plastics do not.

Industrial waste is another form of pollution. Some companies dump harmful chemicals when they are done using them. The toxic waste seeps into groundwater and flows into oceans.

Farm chemicals also pollute groundwater and surface water. Fertilizers and pesticides flow with rainwater into streams, rivers, and lakes. Runoff pollutes water sources with unnatural nutrients. With the extra nutrients in the water, algae may grow out of control and kill fish.
